SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 7 women's water polo team defeated Santa Clara Saturday afternoon, 15-6, to clinch the Golden Coast Conference league title.
Pacific improves to 17-7 overall and finishes conference play with a perfect 7-0 record. Santa Clara moves to 12-16 on the season and ends GCC play with a record of 1-6.
Despite an opening goal at the 6:34 mark by Karolina Hlavata, the Tigers found themselves behind early to start the match, trailing the Broncos 3-1.
It didn't take long for Pacific to regain the lead, however, as Hlavata answered SCU's run with two additional goals and Viktoria Szmodics and Mariana Duarte each punched in a late goal to put the Orange and Black back on top, 5-3.
Leading off the second period, Kyra Christmas recorded her first goal of the day to put Pacific up by three scores. Christmas led the Tigers with five goals of nine attempts. This was the redshirt sophomore's second consecutive match with five goals and her 50th goal of the season.
Following a Bronco score, Rachel Krieger added to Pacific's total registering a pair of goals, one at the :44 mark of the second and 7:42 mark of the third to extend the Tigers' lead to 8-4. Krieger and Hlavata are just shy of the 150 career goal mark at 141 and 144 respectively.
Another goal by Szmodics and two by scores by Christmas kept the Orange and Black in the driver's seat, 11-4. Pacific would go on to score four more as they rallied to their fifth straight victory.
Alexis Hollinrake recorded five saves and four steals in the cage for the Tigers.
The Tigers await a decision for the first round of GCC postseason play.
